We know very few scientists and remember their contribution. Maybe we know Einstein, Jonas Salk, Marie Curie, or Louis Pasteur – because they are now included in our everyday life as a stereotype example. But I’m sure very few of us know a scientist who has saved more lives than all the other scientists combined. It is a sad fact that we do not remember duly Maurice Hilleman – the father of modern vaccines.
આપણે બહુ ઓછા વૈજ્ઞાનિકોને અને તેમના સમર્થનને જાણીયે છીએ. કદાચ આપણે આઈન્સ્ટાઈન, જોનાસ સાલ્ક, મેરી ક્યુરી, કે પછી લુઇ પાસ્તર ને ઓળખતા હોઈએ – કારણ કે તે આપણા રોજિંદા જીવનના વપરાશમાં ઉધારણ તરીકે હવે શામિલ થઇ ગયા છે. પણ મને ખાતરી છે કે આપણા માંથી બહુ ઓછા લોકો એક એવા વૈજ્ઞાનિકને ઓળખતા હશે, જેમણે બીજા બધાજ વૈજ્ઞાનિકની સંયુક્ત સરખામણીમાં વધારે જીવન બચાવ્યા છે. આજની તારીખ માં એ એક દુઃખદ વાત છે કે આપણે મૌરિસ હિલમેન Maurice Hilleman – આધુનિક રસીઓના પિતા, ને નથી ઓળખતા.
In the 18th century, Edward Jenner first invented the vaccine against smallpox, then in the 19th century, Louis Pasteur invented the rabies vaccine to prevent rabies. In the first 50 years of the 20th century, vaccines were developed by various scientists to prevent 6 important diseases (Diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough, yellow fever, influenza, polio).
18મી સદીમાં એડવર્ડ જેનરે પ્રથમ Smallpox (શીતળા)ની રસી શોધી, તે પછી 19મી સદીમાં લુઇ પાસ્ટરે રેબિસ (Rabies) – હડકવા અટકાવા માટે ની રસી શોઘી. 20મી સદીના પહેલા 50 વર્ષોમાં વિવિધ વૈજ્ઞાનિકો દ્વારા વધારે 6 રોગથી બચવા માટેની રસી શોધવામાં આવી (Diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough, Yellow fever, Influenza , polio).
In a booming development, vaccines against 9 more diseases were discovered in just 50 years from 1950 to 2000. Before 1950, millions of people worldwide died from diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), chickenpox, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Survival against these 9 diseases has increased the life expectancy of human beings in the world by almost 30 years – and the vaccines to prevent all these diseases is the gift of only one scientist. It also includes the world’s first anti-cancer vaccine (hepatitis vaccine). The scientist is Maurice Hilleman. And maybe we forget him a million of times – but today the #COVID19 definitely reminds us of #MauriceHillman.
1950 થી 2000 ના માત્ર 50 વર્ષોના સમયગાળામાં 9 રોગો સામેની રસી શોધાઈ. 1950 પહેલા દુનિયામાં measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), chickenpox, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) જેવા રોગોને કારણે કરોડોની સંખ્યામાં લોકો મૃત્યુ પામતા હતા. આ 9 રોગો વિરુદ્ધ બચવા થી દુનિયામાં માણસ નું આયુષ આશરે 30 વર્ષ વધ્યું – અને આ બધા રોગો થી બચવા માટે ની રસી માત્ર એક વૈજ્ઞાનિકની દેન છે. એમાં દુનિયાની સૌથી પહેલી કેન્સર (liver) વિરોધી રસી પણ શામિલ છે (hepatitis vaccine). તે વૈજ્ઞાનિક મૌરિસ હિલમેન (Maurice Hilleman) છે. અને આપણે તમને રોજ ભલે ના યાદ કરીયે – પણ આજે આ COVID-19 આપણને મૌરિસ હિલમેન ની યાદ આપાવે છે.
